As a destination wedding videographer I’m often astounded at the locations our clients invite us to. So we were over the moon to learn that Lydia and Paul had booked us to film their destination wedding in Italy at the extraordinary and historic Villa Del Balbianello on Lake Como. This was one of the villas that we had yet to work at. It is as magical as the website shows and today it is a registered FAI property (supported by the foundation for the Italian environment) and open to visitors who can visit it until 5pm. After this it becomes a wedding venue of note! The main reception area has splendid lake views from a high point and the perfect setting for the perfectly elegant wedding in Italy.
The spectacular gardens roll down the hill towards the water’s edge where the wedding party and guests are brought by speed boat, often a Riva. It is common practice that everyone (including wedding videographer, videographer’s equipment and photographer) all come by boat as it is the most straightfoward way to get everyone to Villa del Balbianello as access to it is tricky.
A Franciscan monastery had existed on this peninsula location since the 13th century and it was later bought by a Cardinal who added the loggia in 1787. This loggia appears in the wedding video where the couple cut the cake. Today the walls are covered in a beautifully maintained design of climbing fig and the loggia offers two different views across Lake Como – spectacular, in other words. Perfect for a wedding of course.
More recently in modern times, two blockbuster movies the Bond movie Casino Royale and Star Wars, amongst others have been filmed at the Villa. Here is Lydia and Paul’s spectacular highlights film 🎥. Superb drone footage by Armando who was appointed to do the drone work.
