In Hinduism, marriage represents the joining of two eternal souls, united in their pursuit of the purushartha, or the four aims of life: dharma (righteousness), artha (prosperity), kama (desire), and moksha (liberation). It is viewed as a spiritual partnership that intertwines the minds, bodies, and souls of the couple, forging sacred bonds during the wedding ceremony, not only between them but also between their families.

The Hindu or Indian wedding ceremony encompasses a series of rituals and ceremonies that have remained largely unchanged for thousands of years. Rooted in the values of selfless love, kindness, compassion, honesty, and fidelity, these rituals serve to promote righteous living and the sharing of these cherished ideals. The ceremonies are traditionally conducted in Sanskrit, the mother of all Indian languages.
Before the main Indian wedding ceremony, several pre-wedding rituals take place, with variations based on deity tradition, linguistic region, community, and family. Two of the more common pre-wedding ceremonies are the haldi (also known as pithi) ceremony and the mehndi ceremony.
The haldi ceremony involves applying a mixture of turmeric, oil, and water to the bride and groom’s bodies, symbolizing purity and auspiciousness. Family members lovingly anoint the couple while offering blessings to ward off any evil spirits, ensuring a smooth and obstacle-free journey into their new life together. That day everyone wore some shade of yellow, and what a spectacular scene that was with the Tuscan hills as a backdrop and the Villa, the wedding venue, complete with cypress trees framing the ceremony area.
The mehndi ceremony, held a day or two prior to the wedding, is a colorful and joyous occasion. The bride’s hands and feet are adorned with intricate henna designs. It is believed that the depth of the mehndi color indicates the level of happiness in the couple’s married life. Interestingly, the groom’s name is often hidden within the patterns, and he must find it following a playful tradition. While traditionally exclusive to the bride and her female relatives, it has become increasingly common for grooms to join in the mehndi celebration. At Rushil and Shruti’s mehndi, everyone partook. The children loved it, especially the little girls who had perhaps not attended a wedding mehndi before.
The Hindu wedding rituals embrace the five elements of nature: fire, earth, water, air, and ether. The wedding ceremonies take place in the presence of a sacred fire, symbolizing Agni, the God of Fire. Agni acts as a divine and impartial witness, representing the light of knowledge that leads to eternal happiness. The bride and groom make their vows, bound by the sanctity of the fire.
